AUSTIN --
The Texas Funeral Service
Commission said a woman accused of hiding a baby's body in the pants of a man's
corpse for cremation should lose her funeral director's
license.
Officials said
Stephanie Barkley of Houston was apparently trying to avoid paying the extra $50
it would have cost to have the baby
cremated.
Commission
chairman Harry Whittington said, "I believe this is absolutely the worst case
I've seen in seven
years."
The commission also
recommended fining the 41-year-old Barkley $41,500. The recommendations now go
to a state administrative law judge for
trial.
Barkley already
pleaded no contest earlier this year in Harris County criminal court to a
misdemeanor charge of abusing a
corpse.
Her lawyer said the
criminal case was based on circumstantial evidence and that it involved one of
Barkley's employees.
